And so it begins...

So here's my first attempt at writing a blog.  Bear with me as I try my hand at writing something interesting enough to hold someone's attention and entice them enough to come back for more!  Feels a little strange to be writing with the pure intention to entertain and inform others and expecting them respond in a positive way - seems a bit narcissistic.  But here I am and there you are (hopefully). :)  Just looked back and realized I wrote "writing" three times in the past three sentences - so much for interesting!  Anyway,  let's get to it...

After several months of studying with the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) - which has been a pure pleasure (who knew I could actually "enjoy" studying!?!) - I am finally ready to put my nutritional knowledge and words into action.  Ever since I attended massage therapy school (ASHA) in Atlanta, Ga. back in 1997,  I have loved giving friends little health tips here and there and developed a deep passion for nutrition and the desire to assist others with their food choices and habits.  It was one of those friends that really gave me the push I needed this year to look into how I could best support others and make a living at the same time.  Thank you Aine for your belief in me.

Before I ever thought about getting into any sort of health profession,  I had struggled for years with my own health concerns (okay - being fat).  Back in High School I put on a significant amount of weight in a short period of time.  I look back now and am convinced I was just going through puberty and having boobs kind of freaked me out.   Nonetheless, with the weight gain came the low self-esteem and self-loathing and I immediately jumped on the diet roller coaster.  Started out with NutriSystem - powdered eggs anyone?  Moved on to Slimfast - NEVER filled me up - and so on.  I felt like I tried everything and I just kept putting on the pounds.  I was so focused on what to eat, what not to eat, don't eat - that I was making myself miserable.  I would say it took me a good ten years before things started to click and I knew that I needed to make some changes.  I gave up on dieting - decided to eat what I wanted in a more conscious way - and really started living.  I also rediscovered how much I enjoyed moving my body and I didn't need to drag myself to the gym to do that!  Meeting my husband Blake is what ultimately set me free.  To find someone who believed in me and loved me - warts and all - changed everything.  He gave me the confidence to get into ASHA and supported me throughout that year and continues to support me in all that I do.  And here we are,  11 years of marriage later with two beautiful children whom I hope to pass down my love for others and for self through real food and real human -and spiritual - connections.

So there's a glimpse into my life and what brought me to where I am today.  This is an exciting new chapter in my (our) life and I can't wait to see what unfolds. My hope is to take as many people as possible on this journey of self-discovery and community through eating well, discovering true self-acceptance and taking the time to sit back and enjoy this one life we are given.  Join me, won't you?
